Tallmadge Duke to Become BP Gas Outlet

By the end of the month, the Tallmadge Duke station is scheduled to be converted into a BP gasoline outlet.

The Duke and Duchess Shoppes, consisting of 100 locations in Ohio and West Virginia, are owned by Ohio-based Englefield Oil, which began business in 1961 with three service stations and an office located in the basement of founder F.W. Englefield III. The Duke and Duchess chain was launched in 1970 and was among the pioneers of the combined gas station/convenience store which has become the industry norm. The chain has twice won the Peoples’ Choice Award.

The Tallmadge Duke was formerly supplied by the independent Ashland Oil Company, and has actually been receiving fuel through BP for a couple of months. BP is the supplier to most Duke and Duchess outlets. The pumps and signage in the pump area will be changed to reflect the BP brand, but the convenience store will not be changed. Local store personnel will be retained, and the location will be able to accept BP credit cards.

The Duke parent company, Englefield Oil, which employs some 1,500 workers and has annual sales of over $300 million, operates the Duke and Duchess chain as well as the 31 outlet am/pm convenience store chain, several Taco Bell Express locations, and 15 Pacific Pride automated commercial refueling stations. The company has four warehouses and 150 vehicles in use, and also offers heating oil, fuel and lubricant delivery and reclamation services.

Headrick Files Request For Early Release

Former Tallmadge Recreation Center Director Thomas Headrick has filed a Motion for Judicial Release in the Summit County Court of Common Pleas. The Motion is, in effect, a request to be released from prison early.

Headrick was permitted to plead guilty to one count of theft in office and sentenced to two years in prison as a result of a series of thefts from the Recreation Center. However, the sentence allowed for eligibility for early release after six months. Following sentencing, Headrick was allowed to spend the holidays with his family before being sent to the Madison Correctional Institution in London, Ohio to begin serving his sentence on January 6, 2009. The motion for release was filed on July 7, 2009.

According to the motion, while incarcerated Headrick "has worked as a tutor and as a porter at the Institution" and has completed a course in Responsible Family Life Skills, attended a weekly Bible study group, been active in Catholic Services and has received no bad conduct reports.

Also recited in the motion are the assertions that Headrick will be returning home to live with his family, has work available with "a local machine shop" and a "family-owned lawn service", and has paid over $96,000.00 in restitution. The motion requests a hearing, but no hearing date has yet been entered on the court's docket.

Forensic Audit Uncovers Improper No-Bid Contracts

The “forensic audit” commissioned by the city in an effort to figure out just how much former Recreation Center Director Tom Headrick may have stolen has uncovered several construction contracts improperly entered into by the city administration.

The law which requires bidding on contracts in excess of $25,000 was violated when the city picked contractors and entered into no-bid contracts for the new restrooms at Lions Park in 2007, which cost about $40,000; the $26,500 lighted electric marquee at the Recreation Center in 2006; repairs and renovations at the defunct Aquatic Center on West Avenue that cost about $77,000 in 2005 and 2008; and the $56,500 expansion of the men's locker room at the Recreation Center in 2004 – 2006.

City Council has now ratified the contracts retroactively.

The bidding requirement is not new, and most, if not all, municipalities have regulations limiting the amount city officials can spend on a contract without taking bids.

A Change in the Weather

Our weather block, that is.

You may have noticed that while the current weather conditions display has been fine, the "forecast" link in our weather block had stopped working, and was redirecting to an error page. That was due to a change in the format of the feed we use to generate the local weather information we display.

We've modified our website code to accomodate the new feed style, and you can now once again check the forecast by using the link in the weather block.

We have also modified the code so that the forecast information now opens in a new window without taking you to a different website. This functions as a pop-up window, so if you have a pop-up blocker installed, you may have to set it to allow pop-ups from this site, or temporarily allow pop-ups, in order to view the forecast. Please note, there are NO advertising pop-ups on this site, so allowing pop-ups will not expose you to other pop-up ads or windows, it will just allow you to conveniently check the weather forecast.
